Apple wanted to make a maps app for their platform, but it just wasn't ready. It was showing really odd graphics where bridges were supposed to be, and it was even telling users the wrong directions. I have even seen reports of people being stranded out in the desert in Australia because of the faulty app.
Google released their app and within the 7 hours that it was available it soared though the App Store's rankings and quickly claimed the crown for the most popular app, beating apps like YouTube. It has over 8000 reviews currently on the App Store in the United States.
You can download the app right now from the App Store and use it as a compliment to the Apple Maps, or you can uninstall Apple Maps and install this instead.
Also released from Google was a SDK for this. Developers can use this to integrate Google Maps into their apps bypassing Apple’s own mapping hooks and allowing Google Maps to power their apps, while also linking them to the Google Maps iOS app should they wish to do so.
So, did you install Google Maps on your iOS device? Let me know in the comments below.
