VirusTotal acquired by Google, benefits detailed

Many anti malware people out there know about VirusTotal. It is a web based anti malware tool that allows you to scan a file or scan a website. You can also search though their database for info already there.

They are a really great company, and last Friday on their blog they announced that they have been acquired by Google. While most might think that this is a privacy risk because of Google being...well...Google, Virus Total is here to reassure you that this is not what is happening.

Here is the official benefits listed on the VT blog post:

  • The quality and power of our malware research tools will keep improving, most likely faster; and
  • Google’s infrastructure will ensure that our tools are always ready, right when you need them.
This basically means that more people can work on Virus Total, making it better, and that Virus Total will benefit from Google's infrastructure. You will have more defined uptime, and other server-related good stuff associated with that. Techman's World is hosted at Google Servers, and it so far has had superb uptime. Aside from the occasional error when loading the site, a reload of the URL has the page loading instantly. And soon Techman's World might be getting its own domain. All in good time.
VirusTotal will continue to operate independently, maintaining our partnerships with other antivirus companies and security experts.
Hope you all benefit from this change. And also, if you thought about scanning my site, it turned out as clean for all services that scanned this site.
